The few that know me, happen to know I'm not very fond of rap. I'm into industrial, trance, techno, dubstep, with a little of everything else... that is, except country, which I am highly allergic to, and rap, which in a whole I find to usually be a whole lot of crap spewing out of imbeciles with ridiculously over-inflated self-images and egos, i.e. Coinye... er... Kenye West.

However.

I judge music by quality, not genre; I have a very eclectic selection on my phone... I have Beethoven's 7th Symphony Allegretto, almost anything by NIN, Skrillex, Daft Punk, select ICP, Cyprus Hill, and Eminem, as well.

Lately, I've found Damian Marley growing on me. I first heard him in one of my all time favorites, "Make it Bun Dem" with Skrillex—it loops in the best scene of Far Cry 3, where I was torching people... er.. weed fields. Ok, I had to find an alternative way of torching the fields, because I spent all the napalm on... other things, much to my glee. The song fit perfectly.

I regress. Out of boredom one night, I searched Damian Marley on google, to see if he was related to Bob Marley (who I really know very little about), and besides finding out that he is, I found his other music.

Like all rap-related stuff, there is some stuff I find repetitive and annoying, but I like the reggae undertone, if you want to call it that. Maybe it's the other way around.

I found myself thinking back to an old favorite when I was in high school, Maxi Priest and Shaggy's "That Girl". I find the similarities close; I wonder why the mix never really reappeared a lot mainstream until now (post-mid 2000's).

That's the old. Compare to Damien Marley and Nas (To be honest, I've heard of this guy in the 2JZ meme, but don't know of him otherwise, but I like the two together.)

He's pretty good on his own, as well as with other singers. Here's one of, if not his biggest hit:

Here he is again, teaming with someone I've never heard of before. Not the best of the bunch, but still listenable:

Ok, I'm pretty damn tired, I think I'm going to bed. Going to leave this one here as a final example. Bruno Mars and Damian:

I shuddered at ICP... Holy crap that's bad "music" and I say that as someone who likes just about everything besides crap (Katy Perry being my "Why is this popular?" artist).

I also can't believe people "don't like country" as a whole, or rap... It is such a diverse and wide genre. Johnny Cash to Garth Brooks and some of the newer stuff, and some of it is every bit as lively as some rock (The Devil went down to Georgia, Callin' Baton Rouge).

*Just thinkin outloud

I have two ICP songs on.my list, The Great Milenko, and The Riddle Box. I used to hang with a girl back in the last nineties, early 2000s that was obsessed with them, so hearing it repeatedly, I grew to like a few songs. Kinda like how I find Butterfly by Crazy Town, or Can I Get A What by Jay-Z, if I remember correctly, in my list as well.

Kinda like how I have She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy as well. Totally hilarious. I can picture Larry the Cable Guy singing it. I need to find a few other songs, one about a truck driver plowing his rig into a hotel with a cheating wife, another I heard about a son following things his father does. One or two others out there I could listen to one in a while. Might know the devil one, not sure. I'll look in the morning.

I also forgot to mention my admiration for Pink.Floyd... I used to hate them until I realized when they were playing, and how technologically, as well as musically advanced compared to the Beatles and other contemporary bands of the day.

I have similar taste. I like NIN especially, however, im not a fan of most dubstep artists, which the genre is on its way to becoming quite a bit generic nowadays.

Fucking magnets, how do they work?

sorry..

I mostly listen metal/rock, but lately I've been exploring other genres like rap, techno and D&B and I found that I really enjoy some other genres. I've been listening to a lot of The Prodigy,

Die Antwoord (I did not ever think that I'd like them, but I do) Give them some time, they will grow on you.

So here are some of my findings:

Die antwoord-Baby's on fire

Chose this one because it had a BMW drifting in it. Also catchy.

The Prodigy-Breathe

And because you like techno, here is one for you:

Gesaffelstein- persuit

I see that you listed Nas and Damian. And it blows. my. mind. that you don't know who Nas is. I thought even non-hip hop folks knew who Nas was. But hey, at least you are willing to open up and listen to new stuff.

But that album, it is awesome. Distant Relatives. There are a few songs that actually have a message, which is good. Now I'm going to go listen to it!

I've seen the top song, Breathe is probably my favorite Prodigy song, and the bottom one sounds like a mix between early NIN and Ministry.

I've evolved a lot in music. I grew up in a very religious home, so my exposure to music outside of church music was nil. I would hear things at the grocery store, or whatever, but that was about it. There was a contemporary Christian band, Glad, primarily acapella; they were my introduction to something other than mild hymns and whatnot you'd hear on your usual Christian radio in the 80's.

http://www.last.fm/music/Glad/_/V…

That song was what introduced me to the Beach Boys, as well as my like for swing/40's, let alone modern music. For a small label band in the 80's, they were pretty good. I still have a few of their albums.

During high school, a buddy and I started trading CD's and recording radio stations onto tapes, and that's when I started listening to "alternative" as it was considered back in the day. Collective Soul was my favorite for a few years, eventually I started getting into Metallica, but Marilyn Manson and NIN were favorites that still remain favorites today.

I used to be pretty narrow-minded when it came to music. I couldn't stand classic rock, and hated Pink Floyd. In the last ten years or so, though, I've really grown to like Pink Floyd, especially, as I posted earlier, once I saw them in context with their peers—I remember reading that they were in the same studio building as the Beatles at least once. Comparing the two, I know which I'd prefer. I never liked the Beatles, and still don't, but I'll listen to almost anything by Pink Floyd. I find "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" excellent...

For a while, I was taking classical ballroom dancing classes, primarily foxtrot, tango, swing, and waltz. I have a thing for swing music, and had I not run out of money, it would have been really fun. Bands like Squirrel Nut Zippers, Flying Neutrinos, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies, as well as Louis Armstrong, Glen Miller, and the rest of that era all find their way into my playlists.

I had to do a decent amount of work to find who did the song for this, and had to order a CD from Brazil, if I remember correctly, or was it Argentina...

I always like a twist from mainstream. I liked Skrillex before he hit really big. I remember when Da Funk was a new song. One band I miss is Cayuga Klezmer Revival...

But it all comes down to the industrial scene. I'll always love it. Anything else is just exploration or a phase.

The kids are up, I'm still fighting bronchitis, and my thoughts are starting to fray. Here's a favorite soundtrack. I wish I could find more stuff that sounds exactly like this:

I need something like a cross from Trent Reznor via Quake sountrack era and Jasper Kyd.

If anyone has seen something of that grade, do let me know.

The truck driver song was "Papa loved Mama"... The son one could be one of any!

And I liked Butterfly too.
